Before the typewriter was common, with business savvy and handsome handwriting, Fred Offenhauser and his partner founded our agency in the railroad town of Texarkana in 1882. Offenhauser & Co. shared the building with the Texarkana Board of Trade, now the Chamber of Commerce, and Boy Scout Troop 18, which we sponsored. As a border town with saloons and gambling joints nearby, many insurance companies shied away, but with perseverance, the agency grew to represent more than 50 companies. Fred was elected president of the National Association of Insurance Agents, as well as the Texas and Arkansas agent associations.

Through the decades, Offenhauser & Co. became a leader in insurance and risk management services, doing business throughout the central U.S. from insuring homes and autos to complex risks for publically owned companies. We were one of the first to insure publically owned utilities in the 1920s as a pool, to collaborate with clients to create proprietary policies, and do business with Lloyds of London. We developed our own claims and fire protection engineering departments as needs arose.

Josh R. Morriss, Sr., Josh R. Morriss, Jr., and now Don N. Morriss followed Mr. Fred and also served as state association presidents. Our other agency partners continue to serve with distinction in leadership roles in the insurance industry and our communities.
